Oliver Sim, best known as the author, singer and bassist of The Xx, unveils the new track “GMT”, accompanied by the video directed by longtime friend and collaborator Laura Jane Coulson. Watch it here. The debut album Hideous Bastard, a collection of tracks produced by Jamie xx and inspired by Oliver’s life experiences and his passion for horror films, arrives on September 9 on Young.
“‘GMT’ was one of the first songs we worked on for the record. I had proposed to Jamie that he escape to Australia to avoid the English winter. We worked in Sydney and took a road trip to Byron Bay, stopping at secluded beaches and listening to a lot from the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson in the meantime. The very first song we created was ‘GMT’, from a sample of Brian Wilson’s ‘Smile’. ‘GMT’ is pining for love thousands of miles away, so much so that you have another time zone. But it is also a love letter to London.”
“I remember hearing the beginnings of ‘GMT’ in 2020 when Oliver was writing the record,” says Coulson. “It’s been in my head ever since. So I was beyond happy when Oliver asked to collaborate on the video for ‘GMT’ (actually my favorite song from the record). We wanted to make something simple and positive that focused on Oliver’s performance. I also wanted to capture his energy and show moments where we see a hint of his off-stage persona. We had so much fun making it. ” Enjoy the tune!
