Song of the Day: The Black Angels – Firefly

Austin’s legendary psychedelic rock band The Black Angels will release their new album Wilderness of Mirrors on Partisan Records on September 16, 2022. Today the band unveils the single “Firefly”, a tribute to French pop from the 60s with the sensual intonation of LouLou Ghelichkani of Thievery Corporation. The new single follows the acclaimed “El Jardín”, the video of which stars Austin Amelio – The Walking Dead, and his son Lev.

The most impactful music is the one that reflects a broad vision of the world, helping us to distill the universal into something that we can relate to more easily. Since their formation in 2004, The Black Angels have become representatives of modern psychedelic rock that does exactly that and this is one of the many reasons why the title of the new album is so fitting. Fans have been waiting for the Black Angels album for five years and Wilderness of Mirrors is their triumphant return and expertly refines their psychedelic rock attack with a host of intriguing sounds and textures. The turbulent world political situation, the pandemic and the continuing environmental devastation have provided ample material for their distinctive sound and ferocious and powerful lyrics.

Since their inception in 2004 in Austin, Texas, The Black Angels have remained loyal to psychedelic rock forerunners such as Syd Barrett, Roky Erickson, Arthur and members of the Velvet Underground, all of whom are mentioned in “The River”. The global influence of the band is consolidated by the beloved and long-lived Levitation Festival, the real point of reference for the past, present and future of the genre which this year celebrates its 15th anniversary.

The presence of mellotron, strings and keyboards is more important than in the past. The Black Angels – Alex Maas (vocals / bass), Christian Bland (guitar), Stephanie Bailey (drums), Jake Garcia (guitar), Ramiro Verdooren (instrumentalist) – co-produced the record, working closely with Brett Orrison (co-producer ) and Dinosaur Jr sound engineer John Agnello, to achieve something fresh and new while retaining their classic sounds. The band will take their energetic live show around North America, many dates in support of Primus, and announce their fall headlining tour, starting August 20 from Psycho in Las Vegas. Enjoy the tune!
