Song of the Day: Philip Selway – Check For Signs Of Life

Philip Selway has announced the release of his new album Strange Dance, out February 24 via Bella Union and available for pre-order here. To accompany the announcement, Selway shared a visualizer for the bewitching main track “Check For Signs Of Life”.

When Philip Selway asked some of her favorite musicians to play on her third solo record, she said she envisioned it as a Carole King record if she collaborated with pioneering electronic composer Daphne Oram and he on drums. No wonder they were all convinced, so the meeting of an extraordinary number of talented people began, including Hannah Peel, Adrian Utley, Quinta, Marta Salogni, Valentina Magaletti and Laura Moody.

At the base of this extraordinary union of musical voices are 10 songs written by Selway at home with piano and guitar, which show him at the height of his ability as a songwriter. From the opening song, Little Things, a new sense of greatness is immediately perceived. After the acoustic Familial, his first solo album, and Weatherhouse (a little richer, as he says himself, working with Adem Ilhan and Quinta), Strange Dance sees Selway use all the craft and lessons he has gathered in the last decade of solo work outside of Radiohead. Enjoy the tune!
