Song of the Day: National – Tropic Morning News

The National have announced the release of their ninth album First Two Pages of Frankenstein scheduled for 28 April 2023 on 4AD. Underpinned by evocative melodies and compelling lyrical storytelling, First Two Pages of Frankenstein marks an exciting new chapter in the band’s discography. The 11-song album was produced by The National at Long Pond Studios in New York and features guest appearances by Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers and Sufjan Stevens.

Initially, First Two Pages of Frankenstein, the follow-up to 2019’s acclaimed I Am Easy To Find, stalled as singer Matt Berninger went through “a very dark phase where I couldn’t find lyrics or melodies and that period lasted over a year. Although we were always anxious and argued a lot during the making of a record, this was the first time when it felt like things had really come to an end’. Instead, The National “were able to get back together and approach everything from a different angle, and because of that, we’ve arrived at what feels like a new era for the band,” says guitarist/pianist Bryce Dessner, whose bandmates also include his brother Aaron (guitar/piano/bass) and brothers Scott Devendorf (bass, guitar) and Bryan Devendorf (drums).
