Uniform – Permanent Embrace

Uniform are one of the most interesting industrial acts around, formed in 2013 in New York by singer Michael Berdan and guitarist Ben Greenberg (The Men). The band’s line up now also includes drummers Mike Sharp and Michael Blume and bassist Brad Truax.

Uniform are one of the most powerful and violent bands around, think of a mix between the noise of David Yow’s Jesus Lizard and the immortal Ministry, who grew up listening to industrial, noise rock and techno, and with a taste for metal reminiscent of the high heavy metal lineage of Celtic Frost’s legendary debut trilogy.

‘American Standard’ is the band’s most intimate work to date, dealing with themes of self-destruction with a particular focus on vocalist Michael Berdan’s ongoing struggle with bulimia nervosa. His lyrics sink deep into the innermost self, of the small human being crushed by the grip of illness. His bandmates join him, applying a majestic buzz that becomes at once mechanical and omniscient. As the rhythms continuously pulverise, Uniform surrenders to the screeching gears of an indifferent universe.

They will release ‘American Standard’ on 23 August via Sacred Bones, anticipated by the new single ‘Permanent Embrace’. This Is Pop? today’s song of the day is here for you.
