Molchat Doma – Ty Zhe Ne Znaesh Kto Ya

The Minsk trio’s new single is an electronic post-punk gem that recalls Molchat Doma’s love of late 80s/early 90s Depeche Mode and the industrial-tinged EBM of Nitzer Ebb, Front 242 and Front Line Assembly.

From the first synth note and drum machine beat of the new single, it is clear that Molchat Doma are operating on another level. The track pulses with the precision of early 90s EBM, martial, dark, melodic and damn catchy.
Even though the lyrics are in Russian, the emotional timbre of the music universally communicates singer Egor Shkutko’s frustration and pain at having to deal with a long-distance relationship that has been taken to the brink: ‘It explores the pain and despair of feeling misunderstood by a loved one and the endless guilt that follows, even if you don’t realise how you yourself contribute to this pain.’

‘We are a different band – Molchat Doma say about the new album. We are still us but with a different sound and in a different context, but with the same style and emotions.’

The new album is a testament to the band’s change, a love letter to early 90s synth-wave and ebm, but also a technicolour reimagining of the sombre dance anthems the band has accustomed us to in the past.

From the opening synths and drum machine pulsations of ‘Ty Zhe Ne Znaesh’ Kto Ya‘, to the goth/post-punk austerity of “Son”, to the swirling electronic textures with strong guitar reverberations of the title track, capable of bringing to mind late “80s Depeche Mode and post ”Pornography’ Cure, to the sensual and seductive ‘Chernye Cvety’ and its style that brings to mind the cold and synthetic Duran Duran of the early ‘90s. It is clear that Molchat Doma are operating on another level, one that is very high and still unknown to the general public. This Is Pop? today’s song of the day is here for you.
