‘The Breeze Grew a Fire’ is the young Alabama artist’s third release after an album and an Ep released for Interscope between 2019 and 2021. Mereba will release her debut for Secretly Canadian on 14 February, anticipated by the single ‘Counterfeit’.
After the release of her debut ‘The Jungle Is the Only Way Out’, Mereba welcomed the birth of her son in 2021. Being a mother has changed her self-perception and, consequently, the methods and drive behind her creative output. For the new album, she worked with producer and long-time friend Sam Hoffman.
Mereba started writing music at a young age, beginning with her first love for folk music. ‘I learned to play from a folk guitar teacher as a youngster in North Carolina,’ the artist says, ’and that really shaped the way I write songs, focusing on simple stories of everyday life.
Atlanta’s diverse music scene has continued to shape Mereba’s artistic talent. ‘Emerging in the Atlanta music scene has influenced my journey and the way I play music. I went to see shows of all kinds, hip-hop, r&b, folk and more. That’s how I honed my skills as an artist, but also as a rapper and R&B singer. I formed a great relationship with the rap collective Spillage Village, which I am still a part of today. We all grew together in a really organic and wonderful way, going from playing shows for 30 people to playing together for thousands of fans.’
